The Correct Repairman
When choosing a Store, Company or individual to repair or restore your Clocks what should you look for?
There is a lot of people out there advertising that they repair clocks...but do they!
The first thing you should have a look for is a specialist Horologicial Workshop full to the brim of equipment and tools. Also ask if they have a full insurance cover and secure premises. Remember the Watchmaking and Clockmaking industry is not regulated in Australia so it attracts all the back yard experts.
Clockmaking requires a lot of quality expensive tools such as lathes, large, middle size and small, milling machines, re- bushing tools, pivot polishing machines, large ultrasonic cleaning machines, gear cutting engines and the list goes on and on. If you see a room with no equipment in it you are in the wrong place. I have spent my entire Horological career aquiring specialist tools, most no longer made, in order to be able to make parts and restore antique timepieces. The next thing required is a large inventory of spare parts. Mainsprings ,screws, wheels, levers again the list is endless and there are no longer any spare parts houses available in Australia.
And lastly the most important thing to look for, is the person repairing my Timepiece a Tradesman...are they Qualified , Certified and experienced in the field. You would not go to a Doctor if they had just read a book or completed a quick course would you!
It takes years of practical experience at the bench but also the correct training to be able to understand the subject. Remember Watch and Clockmaking is a Trade but there is no Licence to protect the public from unqualified people playing around with family heirloomes and Historic and important watches or clocks.
